Freedom of Access Act requests

The Freedom of Access Act, often referred to as “FOAA”, is a Maine law that provides broad access to “public records” of State and local governmental agencies and other governmental bodies. It is essentially a “government in the sunshine” or open government law, intended to make the functioning of government more transparent and accessible. Under FOAA, “public records” do not include confidential documents, whether they are designated as confidential by the FOAA statute itself or by another law. These confidentiality provisions protect legitimate governmental interests and individual privacy rights.

Anyone can request a public record under FOAA. While there is no special form to fill out, please be as specific as possible when making a FOAA request and include a description of the subject matter of the record, the type of record you are requesting (such as paper or email or other electronic records), and the time period for which you are requesting the records.
