MaineCare Services

MaineCare services are available to children who receive health care coverage from MaineCare. Eligibility for these services is determined by MaineCare rules.

Children covered by private insurance may be eligible for MaineCare through the Katie Beckett Program if they have a serious physical or mental health condition.  Katie Beckett Program Eligibility Roadmap (PDF)

MaineCare Services Population Served Purpose
Targeted Case Management Children/youth with a diagnosis of mental illness, intellectual disability, or a pervasive developmental disorder. Help to identify natural and community resources and assist with locating and linking children/youth to appropriate treatment services to meet the needs of the child and family.
Crisis Services Crisis Number: 1-888-568-1112 Anyone who is concerned because their child is experiencing behaviors or dangerous thinking. To respond to a child/youth and family in crisis in order to keep everyone safe.
Outpatient Mental Health Treatment Children/youth that demonstrate a need for mental health assessment and treatment. Services may include individual counseling and/or family therapy. Address symptoms and promote emotional and behavioral stability and wellbeing.
Medication Management Any child/youth who is receiving medication for behavioral or emotional health needs. Prescribing, administration, and/or monitoring of medications intended for treatment and management of behavioral and emotional health.
Rehabilitative and Community Support (RCS) Services for Children with Cognitive Impairments and Functional Limitations Any child/youth up to the age of 21 who has a developmental disability that affects their every day functioning. Skill building in areas of daily living and behavioral management to support the child/youth’s functioning in their home and community.
Specialized, Rehabilitative and Community Support Services for Children with Cognitive Impairments and Functional Limitations Any child/youth up to the age of 21 who has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Skill building in areas of daily living and behavioral management to support the child/youth’s functioning in their home and community utilizing Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA).
Home and Community Treatment Services (HCT) Children/youth with serious emotional disturbance. Offer strategies to help the child/youth and family manage mental health symptoms with the goal of improving functioning at home, in school, and in the community in order to prevent the need for hospitalization.
Functional Family Therapy (FFT) Youth ages 11-18 who are experiencing (or at risk of experiencing) delinquent behavior and their family. Family-based model meant to improve family functioning and address risk and protective factors both within and outside the family to decrease negativity and dysfunctional patterns of behavior.
Multi Systemic Therapy (MST) Youth ages 12-17 with serious disruptive behavior. Intensive family-based treatment that addresses serious disruptive behavior by focusing across the youth’s environment.
Multi Systemic Therapy Problem Sexual Behavior Youth between 10 and 17.5 years of age (and their families) when the youth has engaged in sexually abusive behavior toward others. A clinical adaptation of MST specifically designed and developed to treat youth (and their families) for problematic sexual behavior.
Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Those living with or caring for children with serious mental illness. Intensive 24/7 symptom management and supports in home, school, and community settings to prevent the need for hospitalization.
Residential Treatment Services Children with a mental health or dual diagnosis who require treatment provided in an out-of-home intensive treatment setting. A short-term treatment (1-4 months) meant to teach the child/youth and their parent the skills to manage behaviors safely at home.

Non-MaineCare Services

The types of services listed below do not require MaineCare eligibility but do require prior approval by Children's Behavioral Health Services.

Non-MaineCare Services Population Served Purpose
Respite Care Caregivers of children/youth up to the age of 18 with certain behavioral health disabilities. Relief to parents/guardians responsible for the care of children/youth with Serious Emotional Disturbance or developmental disability.
Youth Homeless Services Children/youth up to the age of 21 who are experiencing homelessness. Provide shelter, mentoring, and guidance to homeless children/youth.
Individual Planning Funds Children/youth up to the age of 21 who are receiving a children’s behavioral health service. To provide financial assistance to support treatment goals in the child’s support plan.
Substance Use Treatment Resource for Youth Youth struggling with substance use. To intervene early in a youth’s development, to help the youth build skills to manage their emotional, psychological, and psychiatric needs in a healthy way that replaces the use of substances.
