COVID19 Prevention Checklist Industry Guidance

The State of Maine has adopted a staged approach, supported by science, public health expertise, and industry collaboration, to allow Maine businesses to safely open when the time is right. The plan is available at www.maine.gov/covid19/restartingmaine.
This is one of many industry guidance documents the State is preparing for businesses so they can be prepared to meet health guidelines and reopen safely. Please make sure you pair this document with the general guidance document that applies to all industries, which is available on maine.gov/decd.
Please note: This document may be updated as additional information and resources become available.
- Require employees to wear cloth face coverings and to practice good hand hygiene with frequent handwashing, especially between contact with customers and customer equipment.
- Where possible, stagger employee shifts and meal breaks to avoid staff crowding.
- Ensure employees stay 6 feet apart whenever practical.
- Adjust seating in break rooms and other common areas to reflect physical distancing practices.
- Prohibit gatherings or meetings of employees of 10 or more during working hours.
- Permit employees to take breaks and lunch outside, or in such other areas where physical distancing is attainable.
- Campground management should set up a means of communicating with guests over the internet or telephone. This will limit face-to-face interactions for transactions like checking into the campground and complaints/recommendations from guests.
- Closed vehicles provide a setting where infection can spread. Limit of one employee per campground truck/ATV/UTV when possible. Camp vehicles, UTV/ATVs should be cleaned and disinfected regularly, and face coverings should be worn when 2 or more employees share a vehicle that does not allow for physical distancing.
- When camp vehicles are transporting clients, take only one family at a time, consider use of barriers in vans and use of facial covering.
- Limit interaction between employees and outside visitors or delivery drivers; implement touchless receiving practices if possible.
- Adjust training/onboarding practices to limit the number of people involved and allow for 6-foot spacing; use virtual/video/audio training when possible.
- Discourage employees from using colleagues’ phones, desks, workstations, radios, and handhelds/wearables. Shared work tools and equipment must be disinfected between users.
- Provide employees training on:
- physical distancing guidelines and expectations
- monitoring personal health
- proper wear, removal, disposal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- laundering of face coverings and uniforms as listed below
- cleaning protocols as listed below (or per CDC)
- how to monitor personal health and body temperature at home.

- cleaning protocol, including how to safely and effectively use cleaning supplies.
- Consider employee training in safe de-escalation techniques.
- Patrons should wear face coverings in public areas whenever physical distancing is not possible.
- Visitors from outside Maine must follow the Keep Maine Healthy plan. (Updated 7/1/20)
- Establishments must collect a Certificate of Compliance form (on paper or electronically) as a prerequisite to check-in from people who are not residents of Maine or states exempted from testing and quarantine requirements, indicating they have received a negative COVID-19 test result, that they will quarantine in Maine for 10 days, or that they have already completed their quarantine in Maine. Establishments should keep these records for 30 days. (Updated 1/25/21)
- Call ahead or online reservations are required.
- All reservations shall occur online or by telephone in advance.
- Provide COVID-19 protocols at the time of reservation. Persons taking reservations must advise that if anyone in a party is feeling sick or may have been exposed to COVID-19, they are to stay home.
- If visitors are allowed, they should follow physical distance guidelines, mask if physical distancing is not possible and not visit if they are ill. Gatherings above the limit established by the Governor’s Executive Order, currently set at 50 people indoors and 100 people outdoors, are not allowed.
- Maintaining physical distancing of 6 feet and wearing face coverings are the primary tools to avoid transmission of respiratory droplets between individuals. If a space cannot accommodate the gathering limit without complying with the six-foot distancing requirement, attendance must be limited to allow for such compliance.
- Gathering limits as further established by the Governor's Executive Order are subject to the following limits: (Updated 3/5/21)
- All indoor gathering limits:
- Effective March 26, 2021 through May 23, 2021: 50% of permitted occupancy or 50 persons, whichever is greater.
- Effective May 24, 2021 and thereafter: 75% of permitted occupancy or 50 persons, whichever is greater.
- Any outdoor gathering taking place at a facility or event that is subject to a permitted occupancy limit is subject to the following limits:
- Effective March 26, 2021 through May 23, 2021: 75% of permitted occupancy.
- Effective May 24, 2021 and thereafter: 100% of permitted occupancy.
- All indoor gathering limits:
- Campsites are limited to a single household. At the discretion of the campground, campsite occupants may host additional overnight guests who are residents of Maine and other states exempted from testing and quarantine requirements. Each campsite must adhere to the gathering size limits as established by the Governor’s Executive Order. (Updated 8/14/20)
- No walk-in site rentals at this time.
- For contact tracing purposes, establishments should maintain a record including contact information for clients, and those personnel who had direct interaction with them.
- Restrict public access to administrative offices whenever possible.
- Minimize contact with campers as much as possible during check-in process. If possible, perform the check-in outside the camper’s vehicle. Advise campers to pay in advance, online, or using other electronic payment options.
- Provide campers with specific information on COVID-19 protocols, use of face coverings in public areas, and limitations in campground activities and facilities.
- Check in may be conducted 1) through a phone app once the patron arrives on site, 2) curbside check in with credit card and minimal contact with staff, or 3) staff verification of camper arrival by campsite drive by and phone check-in whenever possible.
- Note that vending machines are not recommended at this time due to the challenge of keeping surfaces clean.
- Retail stores at campgrounds refer to the retail checklist for guidance.
- Equipment rentals such as boats and bicycles may occur only if thorough cleaning and disinfection of equipment between patrons. Communal buildings allowed to remain open are bath houses, restrooms, camp stores, and laundry facilities with physical distancing.
- Campground staff should increase routine cleaning and disinfection procedures with emphasis on frequently touched surfaces (such as door handles, counters, light switches, toilets, etc. and including communal buildings).
- Campground staff should monitor groups to avoid (and prohibit) gatherings larger than those allowed by the Governor’s current Executive Order.
- Campground staff should monitor the use of communal buildings to encourage physical distancing between guests.
- Outdoor playgrounds can be used with appropriate care. Post signage advising the use of hand sanitizer both before and after use of the playground and maintaining physical distancing as much as possible. (Updated 6/10/20)
- Swimming in the ocean, lakes and ponds is allowed. Maintain physical distancing in the presence of other non-family patrons on beach areas.
- For campground with communal dining facilities, refer to the food and drink service checklist for guidance on food service.
- Campground staff should post signs/posters promoting proper handwashing (soap and water, ≥20 seconds). Staff should also maintain an adequate supply of soap and paper towels (if applicable) in all public restrooms.
- All gatherings must adhere to the gathering size limits as established by the Governor’s current Executive Order and should maintain physical distancing. (Updated 5/19/20)
Swimming pools and other aquatic activities (Updated 5/20/20)
- Pools must continue to follow the Governor’s current Executive Order regarding gathering size.
- There is an increased risk of transmission in an indoor pool. Therefore:
- Indoor pools are recommended to be limited to single swimming lanes.
- Free/open swim times are not recommended for indoor pools at this time.
- Keep swimming pools properly cleaned and disinfected. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (with chlorine or bromine) of swimming pools should kill the virus that causes COVID-19.
- Swimming pool directors must plan for cleaning and disinfection of items that are typically shared between individuals.
- Face coverings should not be worn in the pool.
- Physical distancing must be maintained to the extent possible in the pool, on the pool deck, in diving board areas, and seating areas.
- Common touch surfaces such as hand rails, ladders, and diving platforms, should be cleaned and disinfected frequently.
- Hot tubs and spas may be used provided that patrons are maintaining physical distancing at all times and using a face covering. (Updated 6/24/20)

- Swimming in the ocean, lakes and ponds is allowed. Physical distancing must be maintained on any beach areas.
