Governor Mills, Department of Economic & Community Development now accepting applications for 2019 Governor’s Award for Business Excellence (GABE)
Augusta, MAINE - Governor Janet Mills and Commissioner Heather Johnson of the Department of Economic and Community Development announced that they are now accepting applications for the annual Governor’s Award for Business Excellence (GABE).
“Maine is home to world-class businesses in every industry that should be recognized for their innovation, adaptation, and commitment to our state,” said Governor Janet Mills. “I encourage all Maine business owners and entrepreneurs to apply for the Governor’s Award for Business Excellence and I look forward to honoring your contributions to Maine.”
“We are pleased to recognize the exemplary work of Maine businesses,” said Heather Johnson, Commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development. “We look forward to honoring the tradition of the GABE Award while also showcasing the diverse and robust business community here in Maine.”
Since 1991, the GABE award has recognized and celebrated Maine businesses with a high level of commitment to their community and employees, as well as exemplary performance in the manufacturing or service profession. Past recipients have included L.L. Bean, Jackson Laboratories, and Sea Bags. This year, the award seeks to celebrate and highlight elements of the Administration’s forthcoming ten-year Strategic Economic Plan, with four new award recipient categories.
New categories include a Heritage Industry Award, recognizing business excellence in the manufacturing sector, forest industry, or marine economy; an Innovation Award, for business excellence through innovation and entrepreneurship; and a Rural Revitalization Award, recognizing business excellence that has contributed to the revitalization and growth of one of Maine’s rural and/or distressed economic regions. The final new awards category celebrates underrepresented demographics in Maine’s economy: veterans, women, and New Mainer business owners are strongly encouraged to apply for the Welcome Home GABE award. Businesses must be in good financial health and standing and have been in operation for five years. The only exception to this is the Welcome Home award category.
Please send applications to BizAwards.DECD@maine.gov. Applications will be accepted through October 7th. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Blaine House in Augusta on December 18, 2019.
