Members of the State of Maine health insurance plan as active employees must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible to enroll in the State of Maine retiree health insurance. This applies to both full-time and part-time employees. Note: the eligibility requirements listed below do not determine the premiums you may pay for coverage.

  • Service Retirement: If retiring under service retirement these two requirements must be met:
    • Have participated in the State of Maine health insurance plan for at least one full year immediately prior to retirement and
    • Eligible to receive a retirement check from the Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MainePERS) as a State of Maine retiree

  • Disability Retirement: If retiring under the disability retirement provisions, participation in the State of Maine health insurance plan immediately prior to retirement is required. Disability Retirement Brochure
