Firearms Hunter Safety

Maine offers Firearms Education courses in three different formats: standard classroom, home study or online. Courses vary in presentation and teaching style as well as student work requirements outside of the classroom. Courses are taught by trained, certified volunteer instructors according to statewide standards. Courses cover the following topics: proper firearms handling (rifle and shotgun), survival/first aid, hunter responsibility, map and compass and landowner relations.

The Standard Classroom Course consists of 12 hours of classroom instruction. Students must demonstrate to the instructor that they can safely handle a firearm, participate in activities, bring in a survival kit with appropriate contents and pass a 50 question test with a grade of at least 70%.

The Home Study Course consists of about 9 hours of classroom instruction broken up into a 3 hour introduction followed by either 2 nights or one day of classroom and activities. Students are required to complete a workbook or chapter reviews from an online course, both of which complement the student manual. Students must demonstrate to the instructor that they can safely handle a firearm, participate in activities, bring in a survival kit with appropriate contents and pass a 50 question test with a grade of at least 70%.

The Online Course requires that students complete the knowledge portion of the course online and attend a skills and exam day which is about 7 hours. Students complete quizzes and exam as they do the online course and are provided with a voucher to attend the skills and exam day upon completion of the online exam. In the skills and exam session students must demonstrate to the instructor that they can safely handle a firearm, participate in activities, bring in a survival kit with appropriate contents and pass a 50 question test with a grade of at least 70%. Students must complete the online course and provide voucher number to register for the Skills and Exam Day. Students must also bring the voucher to the first class. Please visit www.hunter-ed.com/maine to complete the online portion of the course.

New courses will be posted below as they become available.
