Jessica Addison, MS, MD, MPH

Jessica Addison is a faculty member in the Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine and Instructor of Pediatrics and Harvard Medical School. She provides primary and consultative care to adolescents/young adults (AYA). She is also the Co-Medical Director of Boston HAPPENS, a multidisciplinary program that provides medical, mental health, and nutritional services to AYA living with HIV. In addition to providing medical services for youth at risk for the HIV and other sexually transmitted infection’s (STI’s) and victims of sexual assault. She completed her MPH at Harvard T. Chan School of Public Health and was the inaugural health equity fellow in the health service research fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital.  She is also the director of health equity for the Adolescent Medicine LEAH fellowship program and a member of the Equity, Diversity, and inclusion council in the Division of Adolescent/Young adult medicine at Boston.

 

Frinny Polanco Walters, MD, MPH

Frinny Polanco Walters MD, MPH is an attending physician in Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital and Faculty Assistant Director at the Harvard Medical School Office for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Partnership. She is an Afro-Latinx doctor who was born in the Dominican Republic and grew up in Jamaica Plain, MA. Her interests are promoting health education, safety and violence prevention for all adolescents and young adults, especially those with developmental disabilities, and advocating for policies that support greater access and quality services to the underserved, including racial/ethnic minorities and those impacted by food insecurity. She started her medical career at New York Medical College and returned to Boston for Pediatrics residency at the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center and Adolescent Medicine Fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital.

Health disparities and the structural racism continue to impact all aspects of the medical field. One of the goals of this presentation is to create a space to foster discussion pertaining to racism and medicine.  We will also discuss the impact of racism on adolescent health and present options to address racism at the personal and institutional levels.

Objectives:

  1. Review the concept of race, racism, and three levels of racism
  2. Discuss the history of racism in medicine and the impact of racism on adolescent health
  3. Present options to address racism at the personal and institutional levels
