A Brief Discussion of Mental Health First Aid

This training is designed to help youth serving adults to gain confidence in their ability to intervene when a young person has a mental health challenge or crisis. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Maine’s Director of Youth Education, Kristel Thyrring will talk with participants about strategies on engaging with youth, the way we talk about and think about mental health and how the language and demeanor we bring to a situation can impact the outcome.  

Objectives: 

  1. Learners will learn strategies on how to engage and support youth in a mental health challenge or crisis. 

  1. Learners will gain knowledge on how first aid applies to mental health as compared to physical health. 

  1. Learners will understand how language and demeanor impacts engagement and stigma.

Kristel Thyrring, LSW (she/her) is NAMI Maine’s Youth Programs Director.  With a degree in Social Science, maintaining a license in social work, and a professional history in child welfare, Kristel is ready to discuss mental wellness, resources, and why we need to know and do more.  Kristel has a passion for bettering the lives of Maine’s young people and helping them successfully transition to adulthood.  

Note: This activity is planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Maine Medical Education Trust (MMET) and Maine Pediatric & Behavioral Health Partnership. The MMET is accredited by the Maine Medical Association Committee on continuing Medical Education and Accreditation to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  

The MMET designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category Credit. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
