The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) 4th Edition Release

The ASAM Criteria, nationally recognized as the gold standard in treatment assessment, was first developed in 1990. A new edition, The ASAM Criteria 4th edition, was released in December 2023, with subsequent volumes including:

  • Adolescent and transition age youth, anticipated 2024
  • Addiction treatment within jails and prisons, anticipated 2025
  • Behavioral addictions, i.e., gambling, internet and gaming addiction, sex addiction, anticipated 2026

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment programs should continue utilizing The ASAM Criteria, 3rd Edition. The Department of Health and Human Services is reviewing the significant changes from the 3rd to the 4th edition criteria and how these changes may impact the delivery of SUD treatment services in our state. The implementation of the 4th Edition will take some thoughtful planning at the state level. We are committed to providing training and resources to programs well in advance of an implementation date.

Providers are responsible for knowing and complying with all regulations. We will proactively engage providers on an ongoing basis to make sure they are aware of compliance related requirements and expectations. We will also continue to:

  • Educate SUD programs with updated email communications regarding regulatory changes
  • Share ASAM state-wide training opportunities
  • Provide resources to obtain the new criteria, and other pertinent information to ensure a smooth transition

Also available is the ASAM Criteria® Assessment Interview Guide, a paper-based assessment interview guide free to all clinicians. This resource can help increase the quality and consistency of patient assessments, treatment recommendations, SUD treatment delivery and coverage across the state.
