Adult Risk Reduction Program

  • Eligible—21 years of age or older at time of registration
  • Duration—Three days (20 hours) education. May or may not include additional requirements as detailed below.
  • Program Fee—$300

Description

Participants in the Risk Reduction Program will:

  • Receive 20 hours of in-depth education regarding high-risk alcohol and drug choices to assist them in identifying and changing high-risk behaviors;
  • Complete an evidence-based preliminary self-assessment designed to screen for risk factors for substance use problems;
  • If found to be at risk of substance use-related problems, will be referred to a DEEP- certified community-based service provider for a clinical substance use evaluation to determine whether treatment is indicated.

If there is evidence of a substance use problem, the individual will be referred to counseling and required to complete the recommended treatment services.

  • All evaluation services must be provided by a DEEP-certified counselor or agency.

  • Treatment services are determined according to DEEP's regulatory guidelines and the needs of the individual.
  • Individuals receiving services are responsible for payment. Several providers have a sliding fee scale, and many will accept private insurance or MaineCare for treatment services.

The Under-21 Program

  • Eligible—Under 21 years of age at time of registration
  • Duration—Three days (16 hours) education. May or may not include additional requirements as detailed below.
  • Program Fee—$225

Description

Participants will:

  • Receive 16 hours of in-depth education regarding risks and consequences of alcohol and drug use;
  • Complete an evidence-based preliminary self-assessment designed to screen for risk factors for substance use problems;
  • And, if found to be at risk of substance use-related problems, will be referred to a DEEP- certified community-based service provider for a clinical substance use evaluation to determine whether treatment is indicated.

If there is evidence of a substance use problem, the individual will be referred to counseling and required to complete the recommended treatment services.

The Completion of Treatment Program

Eligible—Anyone with a substance or alcohol use problem
Duration—Variable
Program Fee—$300

Description

Any individual who:

  • Feels that he or she has a current alcohol or drug-related problem that requires treatment; and
  • Is willing to seek counseling

May opt to enter directly into treatment rather than take the Risk Reduction Program or the Under 21 program.


An individual who has satisfactorily completed treatment with a DEEP-approved provider since his or her most recent offense may provide documentation and seek a clinical status update evaluation to determine if there is currently a need for treatment services.

Note: Processing of forms through the DEEP office is required prior to your first appointment with a DEEP Provider.

Out of State Program

  • Eligible—Non-Maine residents
  • Duration—Variable
  • Program Fee—$300

Description

Out-of-state residents who receive an OUI offense in Maine may complete the program available in their state for the equivalent number of offenses and provide required documentation to DEEP. The program must include a substance use screening assessment or clinical substance use evaluation component, and any recommended evaluation or treatment services must be satisfactorily completed consistent with DEEP regulations.

Armed Forces Program

  • Eligible—Members of the armed forces
  • Duration—Variable
  • Program Fee—$150

Description

Individuals may complete the relevant program available in their branch of the service and provide required documentation to DEEP. The program must include a substance use screening assessment or clinical substance use evaluation component. Any recommended evaluation or treatment services must be satisfactorily completed consistent with DEEP regulations.

DEEP Phone representatives are available 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.  On Wednesday, DEEP phone representatives are available from 1pm-4pm.
