MDIFW NEWS -- Man rescued in Washington County

[Baileyville, Maine: February 5, 2019] A Baileyville man escapes injury after his ATV breaks through thin ice in Washington County. At about 3:00 yesterday afternoon, ice fishermen witnessed an ATV break through the ice into open water on Grand Falls Flowage, across from Squirrel Point boat landing. The operator of the Can-Am ATV was 56-year-old, Mike Murphy. Murphy was not injured and managed to get to Walls Island to wait for help. Poor ice conditions between the island and the mainland prevented him from getting back to safety.

Game Wardens Brad Richard, Joey Gardner, and Baileyville Fire Chief John McPhee utilized the Maine Warden Service airboat to access Murphy. The ATV was retrieved from the open water and towed back to shore. Ice conditions in this area are often poor according to game wardens. Baileyville Police & Fire Department, Passamaquoddy Warden Service, Downeast EMS, Maine State Police and the Maine Warden Service responded.
