How do I obtain copies of public records?

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is committed to transparency and responding to requests in a timely manner. If the request relates to a DEP program or specific project, start with a DEP staff person - staff directory. They are most familiar with the files, documents and records that may be available.

Many files and data, including reports and Google Earth maps, are available online. Also, the DEP File Room in Augusta is available by appointment for file review. Call (207) 287-7843 to schedule an appointment.

If you are unable to obtain the information you are interested in, contact DEP's Freedom of Access (FOA) Coordinator Kevin Martin at (207) 480-0175. He may be able to help find available information or, if necessary, assist with a formal FOA request. In this case, it may take some time to make requested documents available. There may also be charges involved for staff time spent producing records. For general information on Maine's Freedom of Access Act, please visit http://www.maine.gov/foaa/request/index.shtml
