Division of Safety and Environmental Services

The Bureau of General Services (BGS), under 5 M.R.S. §1742-E (1997), shall provide asbestos, lead and indoor air quality assessment and mitigation oversight services for public schools, state-owned properties, and leased facilities. The Division of Safety and Environmental Services (SES) is authorized to provide asbestos, lead, and indoor air quality assessment and mitigation oversight services for public schools and state facilities.  Additionally, under 5 M.R.S. §1742-G, SES is responsible for inventory of all state-owned buildings to identify the presence of asbestos, lead, black mold, radon and other substances that may be harmful to human health.

If you have indoor air quality questions or concerns or suspect possible lead or asbestos at the facility you are in, please contact the SES. Each specific situation will be looked at on a case-by-case basis and in some instances, based on the findings, agencies may be financially obligated to pay for the third-party testing and inspection services.  The SES will provide support to agencies in the development of an appropriate plan of action starting with assessment and continuing through environmental remediation, if applicable.

The Bureau strives to provide safe and healthy working environments for all its occupants in both state-owned and leased facilities. A building services project report maintained by SES is available and contains a log of all inventories, assessments, and specific projects for state-owned and leased facilities.
