Safety and Environmental Services

The Bureau of General Services, under 5 M.R.S. §1742-E (1997), shall provide asbestos, lead and indoor air quality assessment and mitigation oversight services for public schools, state-owned properties, and leased facilities.

If you have indoor air quality questions or concerns or suspect possible lead or asbestos at the facility you are in, please contact the Division of Safety and Environmental Services. Each specific situation will be looked at on a case-by-case basis and in some instances, based on the findings, agencies may be financially obligated to pay for the third-party testing and inspection services.  The Bureau will provide support to agencies in the development of an appropriate plan of action starting with assessment and continuing through environmental remediation, if applicable.

The Bureau strives to provide safe and healthy working environments for all its occupants in both state-owned and leased facilities.

Please contact Nick Ferrala, Occupational Health and Safety Compliance Coordinator, at (207) 592-2532 for further information.
