MDIFW NEWS: Fort Fairfield Man Dies In Snowmobile Crash

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - A Fort Fairfield man was killed yesterday when the snowmobile he was operating left the trail and crashed into trees alongside the trail.

At approximately 10:30 last night (January 22, 2025), Maine Game Wardens received a call concerning a missing snowmobiler from Fort Fairfield.

Earlier that day, Michael Dewey, age 53 of Fort Fairfield, had gone for a snowmobile ride by himself, leaving from his house at approximately 1:30 yesterday afternoon. When he didn't return home that evening, family members contacted 911. Game Wardens searched area trails by snowmobile late last night, and at approximately 12:15 this morning, they found Dewey, deceased, and his snowmobile, a 2023 Bombardier Renegade Enduro, off the side of the Aroostook Valley Snowmobile Trail in Presque Isle, which is near the East Presque Isle Road. An initial investigation reveals that Dewey was traveling south on the trail when he failed to negotiate a corner and went off the trail, striking several trees and throwing him off his snowmobile. Dewey was wearing a helmet, and it appears that speed was the primary factor in the crash. Dewey was taken to Duncan-Graves Funeral Home in Presque Isle. This release will be updated if any new information becomes available.
