State seal - Maine Secretary of State

SFC Marvin Gene Sawtelle

Your 21 years of service and your two tours of Vietnam make your family and your country proud. You speak of it humbly like it wasn't something that should be honored and remembered with great respect but in fact you deserve the highest ranks in honor and respect. If then, C.O. Colin Powell thought well enough of you to write a letter of recommendation for you than I think that you must have done wonderful and courageous things while you served. I know you don't talk about it much and I can understand that it was a difficult for everyone.

SFC Marvin Gene Sawtelle

Thank you Dad for all that you do and have done for me and our Country. Thank you for your 21 years of service including your two years in Vietnam. Your dedication and willingness to keep our beautiful country we call "home" peaceful and safe is honorable. I love and respect you so much, Dad. Thank God for you.

SFC Edwin B. Ryder Jr.-deceased

In 1968 Edwin was deployed to Vietnam, where he served as a platoon sergeant for the 59th Engineer Company. The 59th was responsible for land clearing and referred to themselves as "Ryder's Rangers". On August 31, 1969, Edwin was clearing land with a bulldozer when a land mine exploded, killing Edwin and three others in his platoon. At the time of his death, Edwin held the rank of sergeant first class.

Sewell Norton

You served in the Army to protect our country and saw a lot for a country boy from Maine. I never hear you complain or regret that you did this. You make me proud to be your daughter.

Sergeant Jeremiah J. Holmes

In support of my brother, who leaves behind a wife, a 1-year-old son, countless family members and friends who miss him every day. We are all able to live free to do what we wish because of the ultimate sacrifice Jay has made to this country. I love you, Jay, and pray for the safety and support of those still defending us all.

Scott Whittier

I wish to thank my husband for his service during Desert Storm. He was with the 24th (Mech) Infantry from Ft. Stewart, Georgia. I am so proud of him and all who have served. Thank you.

Scot MacKenzie

Scot is a very devoted man. To the army, to his family, and to his job. He always gives 100% in everything he does. He would do anything for anyone, he has a great sense of humor and always makes us laugh. He is also a wonderful father to our little girl. This is his second tour to Iraq in five years. Although he is always missed and loved, I am very very proud of my soldier. I love you.

Samuel Davis, Jr.

Samuel Davis is remembered as the last living Revolutionary War veteran in Standish, as is noted on his grave.

More importantly, Samuel was born on the 4th of July in 1862, making him only a young teenager when he fought to give us freedom.

I am proud to be a descendant of this real Yankee Doodle Dandy!
