Secretary of State announces BMV domestic awareness initiative, highlights commitment to survivors of domestic violence in Maine

Maine nonprofit Finding Our Voices to provide materials to raise awareness

AUGUSTA, MAINE – Secretary of State Shenna Bellows today announced that the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) will display materials provided by Maine nonprofit Finding Our Voices at all Maine BMV branches. Finding Our Voices, based in Camden, provides support to survivors of domestic violence, including financial support, dental care, legal help and peer support. 

Shawn Jiminez of Bowdoin College named 2025 John Lewis Youth Leadership Award winner

AUGUSTA, MAINE – Secretary of State Shenna Bellows today announced that Shawn Jiminez, 20, a junior at Bowdoin College from West Gardiner, has been awarded the 2025 John Lewis Youth Leadership Award. The award is annually presented to one Maine youth who demonstrates leadership abilities, has a passion for social justice, and is improving the quality of life in their community.

Maine poster and essay contests now accepting entries from students of all grade levels

AUGUSTA, MAINE – Entries are now being accepted for the 2026 Maine Constitution Poster and Essay Contests. The deadline is March 13, 2026. 

The contests are designed to promote the history of Maine, the Maine Constitution, and the importance of democracy and voting. To commemorate America’s 250th birthday, the essay prompts encourage students to explore our nation’s history and its impact on our culture and government today.

The poster contest is open to Maine students from kindergarten to 5th grade:
