About the Archives

The Maine State Archives, a bureau within the Department of Secretary of State, maintains approximately 100 million pages of official State records considered to be permanently valuable. These include bills introduced in the Legislature, Governor's Executive Council Reports, election returns, deeds to and from the State of Maine, maps from the Land Office, vital statistics prior to 1892, federal census records from Maine up to 1930, county court records dating back to the 1639, and military records through World War I, to list a few.

Submit a Personal Account of Service or a Tribute to a Maine CCC Member

You can submit your personal account of service or offer a tribute to honor a person who served in the CCC in Maine. There are three ways for you to submit your information 1) use this convenient form, 2) email it to maine.archives@maine.gov, or 3) mail it to Maine State Archives, CCC Project, 84 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0084.

The Maine State Archives celebrated the State of Maine’s bicentennial with two special projects to help the public engage with Maine history. Our archivists curated this information from our holdings and beyond to provide a glimpse into the people and places that have played an important role in the history of our State.

Maine State Archives Educational Programs

The Maine State Archives offers a variety of online educational programs that can be tailored to your specific interest or research focus. Each presentation begins with a discussion of the necessity of a state archive and the different types of records in our holdings. The archivists will display and explain primary source documents and tailor the discussion to your region of the state. If you have a particular topic that you are interested in exploring with your class, just let us know!

For vital records from 1892 to the present, please contact the Vital Records Office (Department of Health and Human Services) at 207-287-3771.

The Maine State Archives has many record groups containing information which can be of use to those pursuing family history. These records, many of them on microfilm, can be viewed by the public in our Research Room.
