About Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The Bureau provides licensing, registration and title services through 13 branch office locations as well as municipal agents. Additionally, the Bureau stores and manages data relating to over 1.4 million motor vehicles and 750,000 trailers registered in the State; over 1 million licensed motor vehicle operators, including their driving histories; and much more.

Definitions of Common Motor Vehicle Dealer Words

Dealer: A person engaged in the business of buying, selling, exchanging, offering to negotiate, negotiating, or advertising the sale of a vehicle or industrial equipment.

Equipment Dealer: A person engaged in the manufacturing or buying and selling of: farm tractors with engines in excess of 40 horsepower, farm equipment, construction vehicles or equipment, or industrial vehicles or equipment. Unless otherwise prohibited, equipment dealer plates may be attached only for demonstration, emergency, and service purposes.
