Free Gun Locks

Free cable or trigger locks are available at the Capitol Police office while supplies last. If you have a firearm, please consider using a cable or trigger lock to protect it. As a firearm owner, it is your responsibility to know how to handle your firearm and to know how to secure it. If you choose to keep a firearm for home security, your objective should be to have it readily available to you but inaccessible and inoperable to others.

  • Unloaded firearms should be stored when not in use in a locked cabinet, safe, gun vault or storage case. The storage location should be inaccessible to children.
  • Gun locking devices render firearms inoperable and can be used in addition to locked storage. If firearms are disassembled, parts should be securely stored in separate locations.
  • Ammunition should be stored in a locked location separate from firearms.
  • Thoroughly double check firearms to confirm that they are unloaded when you remove them from storage.Image of a Gun

Caution! Certain trigger locks should never be used on loaded guns because they can cause the gun to fire under certain circumstances and are ineffective on lever action firearms. Remember, to serve their purpose, keys and combinations need to be kept away from children and unauthorized persons. It is an important responsibility to ensure that unsupervised children and at-risk adults cannot access loaded firearms.
