Materials Maintenance Assistant

Time Commitment

2 hours, weekly

Purpose

To assist in maintaining the good physical condition of assorted library materials, to include cleaning and repair of both print and non-print materials.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Cleans books, video tape and DVD containers, and audiobook cases
  • Replaces date due stickers as necessary
  • Replaces broken boxes/cases for audio visual materials
  • Does minor mending
  • Processes paperbacks, magazines and newspapers and prepares them for withdrawal
  • Maintains, adds to or changes materials on paperback shelf
  • Maintains neat general appearance in public areas
  • Organizes newspaper and magazines (put in racks, removes older issues)
  • Sorts and stores book donations

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications Required

  • Ability to work congenially with staff, patrons and other volunteers
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, policies and procedures from library staff
  • Ability to physically lift or move materials as necessary
  • Ability to work neatly and precisely with patience on materials needing repair/mending work of a delicate nature
  • Ability to work with a variety of glues and cleaners that may have irritating fumes
