Vision Screening

Who must submit to a vision screening?

  • Anyone applying for an initial license, 
  • Applicants with a valid out-of-state license, 
  • Anyone changing their license classification, and 
  • Applicants between the ages of 40-45, 52-57, and 62 and older must have a vision screening (Title 29-A, §1303)

Clearance/Verification Letters

Clearance/Verification letter: No Fee

When applying for a license in another state, a clearance/verification letter may be issued to individuals who at one time held a Maine Driver's License and have either lost their Maine issued Driver's License or have been asked to provide verification that the Maine Driver's License is in a valid status. 

Most states require the clearance/verification letter be less than 30 days old to be valid.

Note: Not all states accept clearance/verification letters.

Licensed Interpreter Services

Licensed Interpreter Services for Driver & Motorcycle Rider Education

Pursuant to Maine Motor Vehicle Statutes Title 29-A, when a deaf or hard-of-hearing person is required to complete a driver education course and examination pursuant to Title 29-A, Section 1351 or 1352, the Secretary of State shall provide a licensed interpreter or Computer-Assisted Real-time Transcription (CART) provider. 

Licensed interpreter or CART services provided under this section must be paid for by the Secretary of State. See definitions:
