In observance of Patriot's Day, the Bureau of Corporations, Elections & Commissions will be closed Monday, April 21, 2025.
The Division provides administrative support and manages data for this program area for the Bureau. Dedimus Justices perform a single function under Maine statute, that of swearing in various public officials, including Notaries Public. The office is a lifetime appointment by the Governor.
Types of Business Entities in Maine
The Department of the Secretary of State through the Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions, serves as the registry for all corporate filings in Maine. We develop the appropriate forms required to form a business entity, file all business entity documents as required by law and provide information to the public on a business' status, directors, officers, members, managers, partners and business purpose.
All applicants for a new notary public commission must complete and deliver to the Secretary of State the most recent "Application for a Notary Public Commission."
