Endorsement and Restriction Codes

Maine driver licenses may carry endorsements or restrictions. Endorsements allow the licensee to operate certain special types of vehicle not covered by their regular license, while restrictions limit what, when, or how licensees may drive. Maine’s current endorsement and restriction codes are listed below. A different set of codes was in use prior to July 8, 2015; those codes appear at the bottom of the page. Current Restriction Codes:

  • B: Corrective lenses must be worn
  • C: Mechanical Aid
  • D: Prosthetic Aid
  • E: No Manual Transmission equipped CMV
  • F: Outside Mirrors
  • G: Limited to Daylight Only
  • H: Limited to Employment
  • I: Limited – other
  • J: Other
  • 2: Driver Improvement
  • 3: Geographical
  • 4: Moped Only
  • 5: Motorcycle Operation Only
  • 6: Conditional License
  • 7: Ignition Interlock
  • K: CDL Intrastate Only
  • L: No Air Brakes equipped CMV
  • M: No Class A passenger vehicle
  • N: No Class A and B passenger vehicle
  • O: No Tractor-Trailer CMV
  • P: No passengers in CMV bus
  • V: Medical Variance
  • W: Farm Waiver
  • X: No cargo in CMV tank vehicle
  • Z: No Full air brake equipped CMV

  • K: Valid until 30 days after discharge from armed services

  • Z: School Bus 15 passengers or less including driver

The Y endorsement was also previously used for school buses.
