In 2026, the United States will commemorate the 250th anniversary (the “Semiquincentennial”) of its founding. This anniversary presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to share the whole history of our nation and make progress in becoming a more perfect union. It also offers a chance to transform and strengthen the history field, preparing it to thrive for decades to come, especially here in Maine.
The Maine Semiquincentennial Commission was established in state law in 2023. Housed within the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Chapter Resolve 126 states the Commission “shall develop and coordinate the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, referred to in this resolve as ‘the commemoration,’ through educational and historical events, activities and programs throughout the State.” Read the full authorizing legislation.

What should represent Maine in the America250 Time Capsule?
On July 4, 2026, the national America250 committee will bury the Semiquincentennial Time Capsule within Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. The stainless-steel cylinder, designed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, is designed to safely store commemorative objects for 250 years until the capsule’s opening on July 4, 2276.
Each state and territory have been asked to contribute a submission that represents its people, heritage, and culture. The Maine Semiquincentennial Commission is inviting you to share ideas for our state’s contribution.
Submissions must fit within a 6" x 5" x 2" archival storage box or consist of a single page of archival paper no larger than 8.5" x 11". Items should reflect our state and its people today and may include creative works, written reflections, or symbolic objects created with long-term preservation in mind. Mainers are encouraged to submit their recommendations by March 6. Public input will help inform the commission’s final selection.
