Smith, Mason (1933 - )

Writer and photographer Mason Smith lives in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and has written books about seafaring history. These include Four Short Blasts: The Gale of 1898 and The Loss of the Steamer Portland (1998), with Peter Dow Bachelder. One of those who perished on the steamer Portland was Jes Jessen Schmidt, the brother of Smith's grandfather, Hans Schmidt. Jes Schmidt was returning from a trip to Denmark with his wife and children when he went down with the ship.
