Position: Minerva Cataloging Specialist
The Minerva Executive Board is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic part-time Cataloging Specialist to support all catalogers at Minerva Libraries. The Specialist will participate in Cataloging Roundtable Meetings and provide cataloging training classes, workshops, presentations, and online documentation for Minerva catalogers.
This 10-hour-a-week position will be hired and supervised by the Minerva Executive Board. The Cataloging Standards Committee will determine specific duties and tasks that reflect the current cataloging needs of the consortium and will evaluate the performance of the Specialist. This position will be up for renewal with each yearly budget cycle (July-June). Pay $23/hr.
Duties and Responsibilities may include:
Under the direction of the Cataloging Standards Committee, liaison with the Minerva Mentoring Program volunteers (plus existing and future sub-committees of the MCSC), Maine InfoNet, the Minerva Executive Board, and the Minerva Circulation Committee to address cataloging procedures and training needs, including but not limited to:
- Create and teach Zoom (online) Minerva Cataloging training sessions and classes, such as self-paced instruction presentations.
- Review, organize, and update Cataloging Rules and Instruction pages on Maine InfoNet.
- Sit on the Minerva Cataloging Standards Committee as a non-voting member and participate in quarterly Roundtables and committee meetings.
- Participate in sub-committees and special projects as assigned, such as creating a Welcome Packet for new Minerva cataloging librarians.
- Provide support in the proper application of relevant Minerva policies, procedures, and cataloging standards.
- In conjunction with Maine InfoNet staff and the Minerva Cataloging Standards Committee, consult with libraries to resolve cataloging problems, report trends in bibliographic services, answer questions, transmit information, and discuss options for cataloging library material.
- Use prior experience in original cataloging of a wide variety of formats of library materials to facilitate the creation of correct bibliographic records for the identification, access, and use of items.
- Monitor and help organize the minerva.cataloging@gmail.com account.
- Answer questions posted on MinervaCats listserv minervacats@maineinfonet.com
- Communicate with catalogers directly to instruct when certain skills need expanding or correcting.
- Technological aspects of the position:
- Manage the MCSC Zoom account.
- Create Zoom links for Committee Monthly Meetings and Quarterly Roundtables, and complete all necessary communication of these meetings to participants.
- Record Cataloging Roundtable meetings and post the recordings on the MCSC's YouTube channel for access by catalogers.
- Maintain committee files and folders on the minerva.cataloging@gmail.com shared drive.
- Maintain Roundtable agendas on the Maine InfoNet Shared Drive.
- Keep a detailed record of tasks performed during the 10-hour work week and establish a mutually agreeable communication schedule with the MCSC.
- Manage the Cataloging Roundtable attendance files and spreadsheet on the Maine InfoNet drive. Alert the MCSC chair at the end of the year regarding libraries that are out of compliance.
Education and Experience:
- Relevant experience cataloging within the Minerva Consortium
- Knowledge of current national cataloging methodology (including RDA) and trends
- Experience in file management with shared drives, Zoom, uploading documents, etc.
- Demonstrated teaching and training experience
- MLS preferred
Work Location:
This telecommuting position requires the incumbent to provide their own suitable work environment, computer or laptop sufficient for operating the cataloging applications, and sufficient internet connectivity.
