Circulation Specialist

Description, How to Apply, and Contact:
The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of para-professional library tasks requiring specialized knowledge and to do related work as required. This is a 20 hour per week position, including evenings and Saturdays.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Advises patrons about the library and its services and resources.
- Assists with collection development through reading of professional materials.
- Creates and edits computer records of materials and patrons.
- Assists in maintenance of computer databases.
- Assists patrons with operation of special equipment and machinery.
- Explains the use of the online catalog to patrons.
- Assists patrons in locating materials.
- Answers simple reference questions and refers other questions to the proper source.
- Answers telephone and assists with patron requests.
- Checks out, renews, and checks in materials loaned against borrower's record.
- Registers patrons for library cards.
- Maintains patron registration file.
- Makes lists of materials for patron use.
- Prepares books and other materials for patron use.
- Calls patrons about overdue and reserved materials.
- Shelves books and other materials.
- Assists with inventory work.
- Retrieves library materials from restricted areas.
- Performs minor repairs on books and other materials.
- Makes recommendations of additions and withdrawals of materials and identifies subject areas needing development.
- May guide, whenever necessary, volunteers, and other temporary employees.
- Coordinates the ILL/MILS incoming and outgoing deliveries, and contacts patrons regarding their holds. Keeps the records of ILL requests through MEFINDS.
- Coordinates the purchasing of library supplies, books and materials and keeps the records of such transactions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Undergraduate Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent and related experience, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability.
- Basic computer skills such as Internet searching, use of a Windows environment, familiarity with Office Software (Word, Excel etc.), and use of an online catalog, databases, and familiarity with web design.
- Have working knowledge of and proficiency in the operation of computers and other office equipment.
- Have good telephone skills.
- Have work schedule flexibility.
- Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
- Have the ability to work in a multi-task, fast-paced environment without becoming overwhelmed.
- Dealing courteously and diplomatically with the general public.
Special Requirements:
- Compiling, composing, and maintaining reports.
- Understanding and carrying out complex written and oral instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Must be able to work evenings and Saturdays.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in the library.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to handle situations in which others may be angry or argumentative.
- Perform duties while sitting at a desk or counter or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, or stooping.
- Ability to lift up to 60 pounds.
