Library Aide

Time Commitment

4 hours per week, or more, minimum 6 month commitment

To assist in bringing library services to the community.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs the circulation desk duties (training provided) such as check books in and out
  • Collects fines
  • Issues library cards, enters new patron data into computer, as well as updating existing patron records
  • Answers the telephone
  • Mends books
  • De-selects weeded items from the library's electronic circulation program
  • Processes returned materials
  • Informs patrons of library services, policies and procedures
  • Directs patron to other staff members for assistance as needed

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications Required

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Ability to use the computer terminal and simultaneously interact with patrons in often stressful situations
  • Ability to work at the circulation desk for 2-4 hours at a time
  • Ability to bend or stretch to reach high or low shelves
  • Able to push heavy carts and bins
  • Must be dependable
  • Familiarity with libraries and books helpful
  • In-house training required
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, policies and procedures
