Children's Library Assistant

Time Commitment

2-4 hours per week, minimum 3 month commitment

Purpose

To assist the Children?s Department in providing quality customer service for younger patrons.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists the children?s librarian
  • Assists in the development and implementation of children?s reading, crafts and story time programs
  • Coordinates displays for the Children?s Room display cases
  • Responds to public inquiries and reference questions
  • Produces library promotional materials
  • Enforces library rules
  • Works the circulation counter as needed

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications Required

  • Willingness to learn and use the library?s automation system
  • Must have excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills, including the ability to give coherent directions
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to communicate effectively, patiently, and courteously with young patrons, their parents,
    and otherlibrary staff members
  • Ability to handle multiple activities and interruptions, at once
  • Must like children, and be comfortable working with them individually or in a group setting
