Circulation Desk Volunteer

Time Commitment

2-4 hours per shift, weekly

Purpose

To serve customer needs at the circulation desk and assist staff with circulation duties.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Processes check-ins, check-outs, and renewals
  • Issues new library cards
  • Answers and transfers telephone calls
  • Collects fines and fees)
  • Shelves returned materials
  • Performs shelf reading and maitenance
  • Responds to patrons requests
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications Required

  • Speak English well
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Is honest, reliable, punctual, and patient
  • Has good communication, listening, and organizational skills
  • Enjoys working with the public
  • Ability to learn and use computer programs
  • Ability to access, input, and retrieve information
  • Ability to work congenially with staff, patrons, and other volunteers
  • Demonstrate good attention to detail
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Shelving knowledge a plus
  • General familiarity with libraries
  • Ability to lift and carry stacks of books (generally around 5 pounds)
