Coordinator of Afterschool Programs

Time Commitment

2-5 hours, weekly, Academic year commitment

Develop, organize and manage afterschool programming that will attract and engage youth at the library.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, and lead a creative team to supervise a robust afterschool program
  • Oversee volunteer activities
  • Design and implement volunteer schedules
  • Select volunteers for each available position
  • Provide volunteer orientation and training
  • Organize volunteer recognition and appreciation activities
  • Orient volunteers to increase their understanding of the library, its patrons, its services and the role and responsibilities of volunteers
  • Implement an interview process for potential volunteers to ensure the best match between the skills, qualifications, and interests of the volunteers and the needs of the library's children's programming
  • In conjunction with the library director and/or children's librarian, establish the ground rules for this programming

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications Required

  • High degree of initiative and creativity
  • Desire to work with active, energetic youth
  • Knowledge and experience in working with youth groups and/or teaching
  • Ability to develop and work with a team
  • Community connections a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to create a plan and strategies for volunteer recruitment and retention
  • Excellent oral communication and written skills
  • Work cooperatively and with enthusiasm to support collaboration, inspire volunteer involvement and reduce attrition
  • Computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to set goals and be accountable for completing each assigned task
  • Ability to work congenially with staff, patrons and other volunteers
  • Ability to receive instructions from library staff, and the cooperation to abide by library policies and regulations
  • Ability to organize projects and work
