Book Discussion Leader (Father/Son or Mother/Daughter)

Time Commitment

3-4 hours, monthly, one year commitment

Purpose

With the assistance of the Children's Librarian, develop a plan for promoting, implementing and facilitating a monthly book discussion for fathers and sons and/or mothers and daughters.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Suggest reading choices
  • Develop a plan for promoting, implementing and facilitating a book group
  • Help participants develop guidelines for choosing books
  • Coordinate dates and times with library schedule
  • Work with the library staff to advertise programs
  • Ability to research authors
  • Create discussion questions
  • Keep the Children's Librarian aware of progress

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications Required

  • Knowledge of children's literature
  • Experience working with children and adults
  • Ability to speak and understand English, and to convey a positive, friendly attitude
  • Ability to work congenially with staff, patrons and other volunteers
  • Ability to provide dependable transportation, so as to be punctual, and the ability to be contacted by telephone for scheduling changes and meetings
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of popular titles, authors and genres
  • General familiarity with libraries
  • Must feel comfortable guiding and facilitating groups
