Internet/Catalog Tutor (for online automated system)

Time Commitment

1-3 hours, weekly

Purpose

To provide instruction for the public in the basic uses of the Internet and the library's online catalog system. In this position, the volunteer teaches basic computer skills to adult learners, including how to navigate the Web and use a Web-based email account. Assistance could be given one-on-one or in small groups.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the public in learning the basic of what the Internet is, and how to use it
  • Aid the public in learning the basics of navigating the library's online catalog
  • Train people on how to use MARVEL! Maine's electronic databases

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications Required

  • Ability to speak and understand English, and to convey a positive, friendly attitude
  • Ability to work congenially with staff, patrons and other volunteers
  • Ability to exercise patience and understanding in working with both beginners and intermediate computer users of all age groups
  • Ability to receive instruction from library staff and the cooperation to abide by library policies and regulations
  • Ability to instruct clearly in basic computer use, using the simplest, non-technical language
  • Ability to commit time and planning to conduct classes
  • Requires advanced computer experience, particularly in the area of navigating the Internet and use of MARVEL!
