Today was deadline for submission of Primary Election candidate petitions

AUGUSTA, MAINE – The deadline for candidates to turn in a sufficient number of signatures to be on the June 9, 2026, Primary Election ballot was 5 p.m. today. The 2026 Primary Candidates List for those who met today’s deadline can be found in the Upcoming Elections section of the Secretary of State website. 

Offices included in the 2026 Primary Election are: 

  • U.S. Senator
  • Representative to Congress (both districts)
  • Governor
  • All 35 State Senate districts
  • All 151 State Representative districts
  • The following county offices (vary depending on the county): Judge of Probate, Register of Probate, County Treasurer, Register of Deeds, Sheriff, District Attorney, and County Commissioner. 

In order to qualify for the Primary Election ballot, party candidates were required to gather a specified number of signatures on primary nomination petitions between January 1, 2026, and March 16, 2026, and submit the petitions to the Division of Elections by 5:00 p.m. today. 

A challenge to the validity of a primary petition may be filed by any registered Maine voter before 5 p.m. on March 23.
