BMV hits the road with launch of new mobile branch

BMV4ME portable unit will bring popular services to rural towns, underserved communities 

AUGUSTA, MAINE – The Department of the Secretary of State, Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) today launched its new mobile branch, a portable unit that can deploy in towns without direct BMV services and to underserved communities. Branded BMV4ME, the mobile unit was unveiled in Augusta before hitting the road for a ribbon cutting in Belfast, where mobile services will be offered on an ongoing monthly basis. 

The accessible unit is designed for easy deployment with a staff of two able to set up in each location. BMV4ME will provide the BMV’s most popular and common services:

  • Driver’s license and state ID services, including REAL IDs, duplicates, renewals, first-time issuance, and out-of-state non-CDL transfers 
  • Address and name changes
  • Learner’s permit services, including issuance with a driver education completion certificate or processing applications for a knowledge exam appointment
  • Disability placards, including new applications and renewals for hanging placards

The BMV4ME mobile branch will be open to walk-ins. Dover-Foxcroft will be the first community to host the BMV4ME mobile branch, beginning its service rotation on April 29. BMV4ME will initially rotate between four towns:

  • Belfast:  United Methodist Church, 23 Mill Lane, 10-2:30 on the 2nd Thursday of each month 
  • Dover-Foxcroft:  Piscataquis Community Center, 48 Park St., 10-2:30 on the 1st & last Wednesday of each month
  • Houlton: Houlton Plaza Shopping Center, 114 North St., 9:30-2:30 on the 4th Thursday of the month
  • Machias: Telecommunications Ctr., 17 Stackpole Dr., 10:30-3 on the 1st Tuesday of the month

“We’re excited to bring the BMV to Mainers where they are through the mobile BMV4ME,” said Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. “This modernization improves our customer service, and we can’t wait to take it on the road to service not only Maine’s most rural communities but also senior living facilities, veterans’ homes and other sites where Mainers would most benefit from the convenience of in-person BMV service.”
