Beginning Wednesday, March 18, the Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions will close its customer service window and will accept documents from FedEx, UPS and U.S. mail, and via an onsite drop box only. IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING STATE GOVERNMENT CLOSURE
In observance of Patriot's Day, all Secretary of State offices will close Monday, April 20, 2020.
The Division administers the Boards and Commissions program established in MRS, Title 5 Chapter 379 and lays out standards for board creation, membership and compensation, and lists boards by name.
It assigns to the Secretary of State a number of record-keeping and reporting functions: managing appointment information, material and paperwork; tracking membership; reporting annually on upcoming appointments or re-appointments to boards; maintaining and collecting board activities and expenses required on annual reports; compiling and reporting the results into an annual report that is submitted to the Governor and Legislature; and preparing legislation to repeal inactive boards.
Not all boards are on file with this office.
A number of boards and commissions established in statute are not governed under Title 5, Chapter 379. These include short term task forces, committees or commissions created by the Legislature for a specific purpose.
