Identification Cards

Obtaining an Identification Card

NOTE: Please see the REAL ID requirements page for additional document information if you wish to obtain a Real ID State Identification Card.

Any person who can prove they are in the U.S. legally and show proof of a physical address in Maine may apply for an official state non-driver identification card.

If your social security number is not on file with the Secretary of State, you must provide your social security number. If you believe you are ineligible for a social security number, you must present an unexpired immigration document, such as an I-94, to help us determine your ineligibility.

All motor vehicle branch offices and mobile unit locations issue State Identification Cards. The fee is $5.00. The fee for a REAL ID State Identification Card is $30.00. Please bring proof of identification. One must indicate your date of birth and the other must bear your written signature.

Identification cards will be mailed within 2-3 weeks from the date ordered.

Renewal of your identification card follows the same process as driver's license renewal, and is available through the online service or in-person at the BMV.
