The Board of Trustees of the Topsham Public Library (TPL) is accepting applications for a dynamic and enthusiastic Library Director.

The Director works closely with Town Departments and Town Management, although the Library is independently run.

The Director will continue the Library's commitment to community enrichment, and will work closely with the Trustees on implementing a new long range plan. They will serve as an ambassador, advocating and promoting the Librarys mission with respect for the needs, interests and demands of the community. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and in written, are a must. A thorough working knowledge of modern library policies, practices, technologies and trends is required.

Topsham is a community of approximately 9,000 people in the popular Midcoast region, home to outdoor recreation opportunities, a thriving business sector, and an extremely supportive library community. The average circulation consistently hovers at 100,000 items and 50,000 people use the 13,000 sq. ft. building annually.

Statement of the Position:

Casual reference librarian who is available to work 10-15 hours a week for as needed, to staff the library's reference desk.

The Reference Departments casual employee works with the Reference Team to actively support and uphold the librarys stated mission and values. This frontline position directly serves the public, providing directional information to patrons and answering basic reference and readers advisory questions via phone, email, and in person.

Under direct supervision of the Head of Reference, this position also updates library user accounts, checks out Library of Things, and assists Business Center users with their memberships. This position also has the opportunity to create book displays and other department projects when needed. The ability to work nights and weekends is a requirement of this position.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides customer service assistance to library patrons by responding to patron inquiries, providing reference and instruction, and interpreting Library rules, policies and procedures to the public.
  • Greets patrons and provides directional assistance.
  • Answers library event inquiries, registers participants when applicable, and directs people to the correct location.
  • Interacts with patrons in person, by telephone and electronically.
  • Assists patrons with the use of computers and technology. Excels in serving a diverse population.

Portland Public Library (PPL) is currently seeking an Associate Director, as part of the Library's administration department and member of PPLs senior leadership team.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Director will be a critical leader for Library staff and will help deepen relationships with our non-profit and municipal partners; lead and supervise the Adult Services Director, Youth Services Director, Access Services Director, Annex and Bookmobile Manager, and the Branch Managers; and serve as the de facto manager of the Downtown location.

The Associate Director will be deeply involved in complex decision making, working integrally with PPLs senior leadership, internal and external library colleagues, and designated Trustee committees. The Associate Director will actively represent PPL in statewide collaborative conversations and pursuits. The position serves as an advocate for services and operations, provides support to the Board of Trustees Planning Committee, and is in the first position to lead the Library in the absence of the Executive Director.

This is a Full-time, salaried, 40 hours per week onsite position, normally scheduled for Monday through Friday. This position is non-union.

Nature & Scope This position:

  • Provides leadership to plan and implement library services, pursues new initiatives, manages collections, develops policy and process, achieves goals, and assesses service quality. Partners with Executive Director to develop library vision and strategy, and leads development of Librarys physical and digital engagement with the community.
  • Provides decisive leadership and thoughtful coaching and guidance to staff as they implement strategic initiatives. Must possess a collaborative leadership style and be an inspiration and resource to library colleagues.
  • Fosters an empowered and collaborative work environment and healthy organizational culture. Detailed knowledge of project management including the ability to estimate the scope and complete projects within a set time frame and budget.
  • Acts as the liaison between senior leadership and branch library staff.
  • Maintains a regular presence in all physical library locations to be available and approachable to library staff and be familiar with local community needs.

  • Must have a strong analytical acumen and a keen understanding of and interest in current and emerging library trends and best practices coupled with the ability to articulate PPLs business priorities and key services. Knowledge of and enthusiasm for developing alternative service models to best serve patron needs.
  • Must possess broad and deep knowledge of library organizational practices including the librarys physical and digital spaces, programming and outreach into the community, customer service, and the prudent and creative deployment of resources and technology.
  • Possesses an excellent grasp of information technologies and their application.
  • Must possess excellent organizational and time management skills in order to handle multiple and sometimes conflicting tasks.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision regarding time management and have the ability to consistently make sound, ethical decisions in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to make accurate assessments while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships within the organization. Education & Experience MLS in Library and Information Services from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent is required. Minimum of five years of progressively responsible leadership in library services and related areas preferably in a culturally diverse, urban environment. Desired experience also includes:
  • Developing relationships and working as a liaison to community and supporting groups and municipal partners, developing and fostering a positive, welcoming, and collaborative workplace culture, and implementing DE&I initiatives.

  • Knowledge of advancement/development practices and grant management.

The Gallison Memorial Library is seeking a creative outgoing individual for the part time position of Library Director. The ideal candidate needs a "can do" leadership philosophy that is cooperative and inclusive, as well as good computer skills. They must also have excellent written and verbal communication abilities with the Board, volunteers, and the public as this is a visible position at the library with significant public interaction.

The Director is responsible for the overall day to day operations of the library including specific responsibilities such as budgeting, programming, scheduling volunteers, recommending policy adjustments to the Board, and working cooperatively within the community to further the library's programs and services to meet community needs. Previous experience and knowledge in the library field is a definite plus.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Management: Manage and supervise library operations.

Supervisory: Exercise administrative direction over volunteers, contract and seasonal personnel, providing effective direction to assure the quality of public service.

Fiscal: Prepare the annual budget for Board review and approval. Make suggestions for maintenance, and improvement of the librarys facility and equipment. Coordinate library development and fund raising. Experience with, or willingness to write grants would be a plus.

Collection Development: Update and manage library holdings. Strive to maintain a vibrant and current collection of both print and non-print material. Manage the librarys online presence with the Maine Balsam Libraries consortium. In order to provide full service lending, ensure that interlibrary loan services are available and offered to all library patrons.

Program Development: Plan and implement library programs with the goal of engaging all ages and demographics within the community. Collaborate with local agencies, schools, and town officials to foster community engagement and enrichment.

Communications and Data: Collect data and prepare a variety of reports including the Annual Report to the Maine State Library. Provide advice on library matters to the Board.

Training: Participate in training opportunities offered by the Maine State Library.

Salary: 15-20 hours/week $20.00 per hour

Carver Memorial Library in Searsport is seeking a Library Assistant for our small and active library. This position is primarily focused on working with the public at the front desk, doing circulation and interlibrary loan requests in a busy and high-volume environment. The Library Assistant will continue with and expand on our computer and tech help offerings.

The Library Assistant should be friendly, energetic, and good with the public, with exemplary customer service skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with technology. The ideal candidate will have a special interest, skills, and focus on information literacy and technology instruction. The Library Assistant will assist the public with circulation, reference questions, public computers and internet access. Other duties may include interlibrary loan, social media, book processing, shelving, and assisting with library events.

This is a permanent part-time position at 10 hours per week. Regular schedule, likely Mondays and Saturdays, and may include some flexibility and additional hours to cover staff absences.
