Local Level of Significance

The Harrington Methodist Church in Harrington, Washington County, Maine is a good local example of a nineteenth-century New England Greek Revival style church. The timber framed building was constructed from 1860-63 as a Methodist church. The building is eligible under Criterion C for its architectural style with character defining features of corner pilasters, a closed pediment with a circular window in the tympanum, paired round-top double-hung wood windows, and on the interior a unique coved plaster ceiling with raised accent bands. The building with its tall steeple, belfry, clock, and prominent location on Main Street in the center of town is a local landmark which recalls the thriving mid-nineteenth century small town focused on shipbuilding, coastal trading, and farming. The building meets Criteria Consideration A due to its architectural significance and is not being nominated for its past religious association with the Methodist church. The building is just west of the National Register listed Gallison Memorial Library and is owned by the library association which hopes to preserve the building’s fabric and use it as a prominent local gathering point for library and other community gatherings.
