Criterion C: Architecture

Period of Significance: ca. 1804-1811

Local Level of Significance

The Col. Gabriel Johonnot House in Hampden, Penobscot County, Maine is a ca. 1804-1811, two-story, five-bay, Federal style brick house. The building is significant under Criterion C for its architectural type, period, and method of construction. The faade is laid in Flemish bond while the sides and rear are common bond. The building has a fanlight over the center entry, and the window above on the second floor has an arched head. Four end-wall chimneys rise above the low sloped roof. The building is a good example of a subdued Federal style residence of brick construction, which is uncommon in this location during this time period and is even more noteworthy for the Flemish bond construction. The period of significance is the approximate construction date of the house. The windows have been replaced, and the roofing is now metal, but the building overall, inside and out, retains good integrity to convey its significance.
