Since its establishment by the Maine Legislature in 1907, six individuals have held the post of State Historian: Henry S. Burrage, Augustus F. Moulton, Edward K. Gould, Thomas M. Griffiths, Robert M. York, and Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr.
The duties of the State Historian are:
- To enhance the knowledge of Maine citizens of the State’s history and heritage;
- To encourage the teaching of Maine history in the public schools;
- To serve as a consultant to the Governor and Legislature on matters pertaining to Maine history;
- To lecture on topics of Maine history within the historian’s area of expertise as determined appropriate by the State Historian;
- To respond to inquiries about the existence and location of documents, artifacts and other materials of Maine history; and
- To report to the joint standing committee of the Legislature having jurisdiction over cultural affairs during the first regular session of each legislative biennium.
