Local Level of Significance

The Averill-Philbrick House in Alna, Lincoln County, Maine is eligible for listing in the National Register under Criterion C for architecture. The original ca. 1765 three-quarter gambrel-roof cape and the ca. 1820 Federal Style addition are good examples of their type, period, and method of construction. Later alterations and additions were made to the north ell in the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries as the house transitioned to use as a summer residence. The ca. 1765 section of the house exhibits a mix of Georgian details and later Federal period finishes on its interior. The Federal Style portion of the house has modest details on the exterior while the interiors have good integrity including complete stenciling in one room and less complete examples in two other rooms. A ca. 1780 stable is also on the property and contributes to the nomination as an example of farm building construction in a form similar to an English barn. One exterior wall and a roof truss have been altered in the stable, but it is an unusual example of a smaller outbuilding of its period with good integrity.
