Local Level of Significance

The 1882 Amos O. Reed House at 19 High Street, Brunswick, Cumberland County, Maine is a two-story Italianate style house that is eligible for listing in the National Register under Criterion C for its architectural significance. The building has clapboard siding, a low hip roof, and decorative brackets at the cornice and primary entry porch. It also includes bay windows, bracketed window caps, and a porch among its character defining features. The side hall house retains an interior layout typical of the style and maintains period interior trim and finishes. Also on the property is a ca. 1890 Queen Anne style carriage house that contributes to the significance of the property. The two-story carriage house has clapboard and shingle siding, a large carriage door, a hayloft door, and several windows with decorative multicolor panes. The two buildings were constructed within ten years of each other and reflect a residence and typical support building of the period. The buildings together are a good example of the period’s architecture. Neither building is as large and ornate as several high style Italianate and Queen Anne buildings in the community, but they are a good example of a middle-class residence of the period in the local context. Both buildings retain integrity and their respective construction dates, 1882 and ca. 1890, define the period of significance.
