Originally built in Portland, the Thomas Skelton House was slated for demolition to enlarge a parking lot, but was moved to Falmouth in 1971. Skelton was a housewright who soon after construction was completed sold the dwelling to a Portland mariner, John Rackleff. Afterward, it changed hands and appearance numerous times. The structure was originally one-and-a-half stories high, but another floor was added roughly ten years later, c.1810. The clapboard-sheathed Federal-style house has a central chimney and door framed by tall flat pilasters supporting an entablature with a simple cornice and molding along the facade. It also sat on a brick and fieldstone foundation until its relocation to Falmouth. At the time of its removal it was considered one the oldest houses in the city. Luckily, Greater Portland Landmarks, Inc. was able to find a buyer and restore the structure for future generations to see and study.
