Originally located on the other side of Main Street and further to the south, the Squire Chase House was built in the Federal style but was later remodeled in the nineteenth century with Italianate-style characteristics. The dwelling is two stories high with clapboard siding and a hipped roof. Attached is a long ell connecting to a barn-both with gabled roofs. The front facade is symmetrical with a central entrance framed by red glass sidelights and topped with a fanlight. The Italianate-style elements include the bracketed cornice and ornate rectangular cupola. Fryeburg was settled by a veteran of the French and Indian War, Col. Joseph Fry. He acquired the township from the General Court of Massachusetts in 1762. The first settler to join Fry, Nathaniel Merrill, built this house in 1767. In 1799, he sold the house to James Osgood. Osgood's daughter, Mary, married a lawyer named Stephen "Squire" Chase who moved the home to its current location around 1820. After passing through many hands, the house was purchased in 1908 by Hattie A. Pike, a direct descendant of James Osgood.
