Samuel Bucknam House, 1820-1821 - Columbia Falls, Washington County

The Samuel Bucknam House is a Cape form with a side ell and Federal-style details. The most notable Federal-style detail on the house is the ornate carving found around the front entry. The front door is flanked by sidelights, topped with a delicate fanlight, and further emphasized by narrow Doric pilasters. The outermost pilasters support ornate urns carved in relief. The exterior and interior carvings and woodwork at the house are attributed to Alvah Peterson, a reputable woodworker who also completed elaborate interior carvings that can be seen at the nearby Ruggles House, which is open seasonally for tours. Samuel Bucknam was the grandson of one of Columbia Falls' earliest settlers, John Bucknam. John Bucknam established a successful lumber business and shipyard, which were inherited by his son, William. Samuel Bucknam inherited the family businesses at an early age and constructed this house when he was in his early thirties. The house is currently a private residence.
