Riverview House, 1796, 1832 - Vassalboro, Kennebec County

Outwardly unassuming, this house is thought to be one of the oldest in Vassalboro. The Farwell family built the house and many members are buried in a small family plot across Route 201 which is visible from the small dormer. The house remained in the Farwell family until the 1840s when it was conveyed to the Brown family. Several members of the Brown family served in the Maine State Legislature in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The house is a typical main block with a rear ell; however, it is a large structure of fourteen rooms - two of which are grand parlors with 10' 3" ceilings. The parlors are filled with light by the large windows visible from the road. The house is thought to retain much of its appearance from c. 1832, when it was rebuilt. Rebuilding included adding the large windows at the parlors, the Greek Revival-style porch with twin columns, and a center hall staircase. The house consists of three framed sections. The front Cape is framed with massive hand-hewn posts and beams. The ell is also framed in post and beam but of much smaller framing with vertical saw marks. The two are connected by a third post and beam structure. It is thought that the house and ell were constructed at the same time, but the frames are of differing ages due to how the middle frame connects it all together.
