Moses Carleton House, c.1810 - Alna, Lincoln County

Moses Carleton, scion of the region, built this Federal-style house for his daughter, Elizabeth Dole. Located on a farm, overlooking the Sheepscot River valley, the property also contains two period barns, a carriage shed, and associated orchards and fields, and has changed little since its construction. It reflects the wealth accumulated by Moses Carleton and others as early settlers, shipbuilders, speculators, and businessmen. Of the earlier Federal-style homes and farms in the Head Tide and Puddle Dock areas of Alna, the Moses Carleton House, also referred to the Carleton/Dole House, is the best preserved and most complete in terms of the outbuildings and associated resources. It is two stories tall with a central chimney block. The main entrance faces south and is flanked on each side by two windows. The door is topped by a four-light transom. The windows are trimmed with delicate band molding and narrow lintels. A secondary entrance is on the eastern elevation, slightly right of center. A rear ell is attached to the north elevation. The interior features three rooms centered around the chimney on each floor with a winder stair with thin, square, and tapered balusters and newel posts leading to the second floor from the front entry.
