Mitchell House, c.1800 - Yarmouth, Cumberland County

The Mitchell House, located in Yarmouth, is an excellent example of a Federal-style residence and was home to several noteworthy town residents. The large two-story dwelling sits on a granite foundation and has a steeply pitched hip roof with four brick chimneys. It is notable for its full height tapered fluted pilasters which provide emphasis on the center of the facade. The door is surrounded by a half-length sidelights, subtle entablature, and a fanlight with a unique decorative border and keystone. The decorative details at the entablature and arch are present over the first story windows and under the roof line. Dr. Ammi R. Mitchell was an early leader in Yarmouth. A practicing physician, he was active in town improvements. He helped build the Union Wharf which provided the town a port to exchange goods. Mitchell was also a large contributor to the North Yarmouth Academy and sat on the first board of trustees. He later served as president of the board. Mitchell was elected to ten terms in the Massachusetts Legislature and became a State Senator in 1808. Mitchell died four years after Maine's statehood.
