Major Reuben Colburn House, 1765 - Pittston, Kennebec County

The Major Reuben Colburn House has undergone several changes since its construction in 1765 but retains its overall original form. It is a two-story side-gabled clapboard sided structure with a large center chimney. The facade is symmetrical except for the second floor window above the entry door which is placed slightly to the left (west) side. The door is framed by sidelights, wood pilasters, and a wide entablature. The cornice is modest with returns on the side elevations. There is second entry door on the east elevation. Major Reuben Colburn and his family were early settlers in Gardiner where he was granted 250 acres. He built a saw mill, brickyard, boatyard, and grist mill on the shores of the Kennebec River. He assisted Benedict Arnold with the planning and supplying of Arnold's 1775 military expedition from northern Maine to Quebec City. The house remained in the Colburn family until 1953 and is now a state historic site. The house is also a contributing resource to the Arnold Trail to Quebec Historic District.
